Hydrogen-ready boilers may not be ready for another few years, but hydrogen-blend-ready boilers are available right now. Hydrogen-blend boilers have the ability to run on a mix of 80% natural gas and 20% hydrogen (though the inclusion of hydrogen into the national grid is unlikely to happen before 2028). They also burn 20% less fossil fuel than a traditional gas boiler, helping you to reduce your carbon footprint and heat your home, business, or public buildings more sustainably.

Are hydrogen boilers available?

Yes and no! Hydrogen-blend-ready boilers are available now, but hydrogen-ready boilers are not. The difference is that hydrogen-blend-ready boilers can run on an 80/20 ratio mix of natural gas to hydrogen (though this is not expected to happen until around 2028), while hydrogen-ready boilers are very much in the experimental phase and won’t be commercially available for at least another few years.

Are hydrogen-ready boilers available in the UK?

No, as they are still in the research and development stage. The government is currently working on a plan to decarbonise the UK’s heating system, and hydrogen is seen as one of the key technologies for achieving this. They’ve set a target of having 5 million hydrogen-ready boilers installed in the UK by 2030, so hydrogen boiler technology becoming prominent is imminent.

Although hydrogen burns differently from gas, the principles are essentially the same. Theoretically, it shouldn’t be any more expensive to run than a traditional gas boiler.

The cost of a hydrogen-ready boiler in the UK is not yet known, but it’s expected that they’ll be comparable in price to traditional gas boilers, which are anywhere between £500 and £3,000.
