The different types of insulation

Most of the heat lost in your home comes from inadequately insulated roofs and walls. That’s why, here at Grant Store, we offer effective insulation solutions for both of these areas.

Room-in-roof insulation

Room-in-roof insulation is designed for homes that already have a roof/attic room. Combining our decades of skill and state-of-the-art materials, we’ll insulate all the elements of the room(s) with British Gypsum insulated backed plasterboard. These incredibly energy-efficient boards are 63mm thick and consist of:

50mm insulation
12.5mm plasterboard
5mm of glue and vapour barriers

Once this high-quality material has been installed, you’ll notice the physical benefits immediately, as your home becomes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Typical wall insulation costs vary from £2,500 to £15,000, and most installations take between 3-5 days to complete. Insulation grants are available towards the cost of installation, so see if you meet the eligibility criteria now.

Roof Insulation Installation

Internal solid wall insulation

Solid walls are well known for not retaining heat. In fact, they release twice as much heat as cavity walls do. However, Grant Store can now insulate solid walls from the inside.

This method uses the same British Gypsum insulated backed plasterboard used in room-in-roof installations. We secure these boards to the inside of the external walls and then plaster all the walls for a clean, fresh finish. Like room-in-roof installation, most internal solid wall insulation projects take between 3-5 days to complete.

Insulating a solid wall home properly can add to its market value by significantly improving its Energy Efficiency rating, and, in the case of internal wall insulation, it can improve the interior decor and appearance of your property too.

Underfloor insulation

There are also insulation grants available for underfloor insulation, with the Government’s ECO4 scheme being the main contributor. Installing underfloor insulation is relatively straightforward but can be disruptive if you’re living in the house at the time.

Preparing the subfloor – This may involve removing any existing flooring, cleaning the subfloor, and sealing any cracks or gaps.
Installing a vapour barrier – This is a sheet of plastic that is installed on the subfloor to prevent moisture from migrating into the insulation.
Installing the insulation – Usually done by laying rolls of insulation between the floor joists.
Sealing – This is important to prevent air from bypassing the insulation and reducing its effectiveness.
Reinstalling the flooring – If the existing flooring was removed, it will need to be reinstalled.

How the insulation grant scheme works

We like to keep the application process as simple as possible for you , which is why all you need to do is complete our quick questionnaire.

If you meet the criteria for funding, a member of our team will call you back to discuss your application and to check when it’s convenient to do a survey of your property. Once funding has been approved, we’ll get to work making your home much more energy-efficient.

Who qualifies for insulation grants?

Not everyone is eligible to access insulation grants and funding. There is a specific set of criteria that has to be met in order to qualify, usually associated with income, whether you’re in receipt of certain benefits, or your homeowner status.

Can you get government grants for insulation?

Yes. The ECO4 scheme became more widely available in April 2023, including people who traditionally would have ‘earned too much’ to qualify. There are now two ways to qualify:

The ‘low-income’ group
You can apply now if:

You own your own home or rent from a private landlord
Your home has an EPC rating of D or below
Someone living at the property qualifies for certain benefits OR
You live in social housing or are considered vulnerable to the effects of living in a cold home OR your total household income is under £31,000 a year

The new ‘general’ group

To be eligible under this grouping, you need to be able to tick ALL of the following conditions:

You own your own home
Your home is in council tax band A to D in England, A to E in Scotland, or A to C in Wales.
Your home has an EPC rating of D or below, or, if you live in social housing, an EPC rating of E, F or G

The people that qualify under this grouping can only apply for one type of insulation and might have to pay a proportion of the costs involved, but you’ll be informed of this before any work begins.

What is the insulation scheme for 2023?

ECO4, which is the latest iteration of the Government’s ECO scheme, is designed to deliver energy efficiency and heating measures to homes in Great Britain. It’s due to run until 2026, and there’s a whopping £4 billion in funds available. Learn more about ECO4 here.

Can over ‘70s get free loft insulation?

Yes. Most pensioners will be able to claim for insulation grants under the Government’s ECO4 scheme by way of receiving Pension Credit or because they’ve been referred via the LA Flex scheme due to ill health.
